Sphere

My thesis focuses on the symbolism of the circle. The circle is the most ancient geometrical shape: a perfectly round form, a sacred place, limitless space, time unbound, a single dot, a cosmic gesture, eternal, all centre and no circumference, transcendental, divine, cyclic rotation? As a designer I am interested in how circles are used on the stage. In other words, the spatial relationship between the circle, physical space and the human body. I am intrigued by how the human body fits into the sphere: whether it can merge with it, embody its qualities, partake in its completeness, harmony, and endless dynamics, or if we can only ever aspire towards it. Can the sphere as a self-fulfilling form serve as a medium for movement or merely determine it?

The narrative of the circle

The circle is the most ancient geometrical shape: a perfectly round form, a sacred place, limitless space, time unbound, a single dot, a cosmic gesture, eternal, all centre and no circumference, transcendent, divine, cyclic rotation? These are the impressions through which I examine The Full Moon Theatre by Peter Rice. I am increasingly starting to see this shape in my activities and everyday pursuits: the ring left by my coffee cup on the tablecloth, my mirror and jewellery, my watch, the coins in my pocket, the circle of my friends and family. And whatever is not a circle, still seems to appear cyclical: the days and seasons, my habits and oft repeated stores... and so I am left with the feeling that everything is striving to become a circle. How do we observe and interpret this shape? What is its literal meaning? How old is it? Where and how does it appear? How many origin stories does it have in philosophy, cultural anthropology, astronomy, religion, historical science, mathematics and other disciplines? These questions led me to examine the layers of meaning behind the circle as a universal concept. I began my research by defining basic concepts such as symbols and their interpretation and origins, as well as the definition and origin of the circle, which leads us to uncover the system of symbols related to the circle. As a designer I am interested in how circles are used on the stage. In other words, the spatial relationship between the circle, physical space and the human body. I also inspect the concept of theatrical staging and the relationship between body and space. Moreover, I attempt to unify and employ these forces by using and analysing references. The goal of my thesis is to uncover the power of the circle and find out why it is so attractive. I want to understand what has compelled people, from ancient times to today to use circles to convey or adapt meaning, whether knowingly or intuitively.
