Ad Absurdum

My masterwork is a conceptual collection of objects that follows the design attitude of Droog Design. I transformed everyday objects and utensils by prioritising their conceptual aspect over functionality. I used contrasts, contextual shifts, and material transfiguration to imbue these mostly insignificant objects with meaning. The humorous and absurd objects of the collection disrupt and invite interpretation, thus connecting with the 30-year-old Droog movement.

thesis

The role of humour and a playful mindset when engaging with works of conceptual design

My thesis seeks to investigate how a playful mindset and a sense of humour help to fulfil the purpose of conceptual design: the transmission of the message and the frame of mind, active participation and attitude shaping. I approached the research from the dual angles of design and psychology, carrying out my investigate with the help of design examples. I aimed to ensure that the examples discussed cover the widest possible spectrum of conceptual design, which is why I picked both Hungarian and international works. The examples range from Droog Design, through MSCHF and Mendini, to speculative design. I sketched out a framework depicting the process of engaging with conceptual work and built my thesis on that. The three main stages of the process are: first impression, interpretation, and long-term impact. I also discussed questions such as: What makes a work of design funny? What is a playful mindset and how does it differ from the classical interpretation of play? Why is the conceptual design approach relevant?
