art school + community centre
The Csíkszereda (Miercurea Ciuc) Art School finally found its long-awaited location in 2008 when it was given its current building by the main square of the city. The newly erected school incorporates the skeleton of the unfinished county library building, which had been incomplete since the 1980s. Prior to the inauguration, the classes of the school were scattered throughout the basements and various classrooms of several other schools in the city. It is a 12-grade school, with two classes per year. From the 1st grade to the 8th grade, there is one music specialisation class and one visual arts specialisation class. In high school, students have the option to choose from three different fields of study: music, visual arts, and architecture, split between just two classes. This odd distribution of specialisations is due to financial considerations and limited space in the new building. Previously, the different specialisations were organised into separate classes. It was only after the move in 2008 that the shortcomings of the building became apparent to its users. The floor area of the building, which was defined by the unfinished construction from the 1980s, did not allow for the creation of adequately sized classrooms. The school also lacks art studios that are suitable for artistic training. The only option for expanding the school is the adjacent House of Culture House of Trade Unions, which would require a complete renovation. The Culture House was built in the mid-1980s during the redevelopment of the city centre. The building houses offices and art studios, along with an auditorium that seats 800 people. Previously, part of the county library was also situated in the building. Currently, the building is underutilised and, apart from a few events, it does not fulfill its cultural role effectively. Meanwhile, construction is taking place between the two buildings, where the school gymnasium is being built.
thesis
Examining the Merger of a School and a Cultural Centre
The aim of the thesis is to present the research that forms the basis for the connection and transformation of the Nagy István Art High School and the neighbouring House of Culture in Miercurea Ciuc, Transylvania. The main task of the research preceding the design phase is to gather functional information specific to the field of school architecture, which will assist in the design process. This includes identifying the necessary functions of community spaces, the architectural decisions that influence the layout of these spaces, and exploring the possibilities for structuring the relationship between the two spaces. As the primary task of a school is to create an environment conducive to teaching and learning, we analyse and interpret architectural learnings based on certain considerations.
