Scripture Highlighting Monochrome Bible
My master's project is the appropriation of Miklós Mécs's 2005 graduation project titled 'Scripture highlighting monochrome Bible'. The original piece is a Károli Bible whose text was highlighted with a yellow highlighter up to page 555. The artwork was stolen before its completion, which Mécs reported to the police. There is a detailed police report of the event. Apart from a digital photograph of the Bible, this police report is the only official 'proof' and technical description of the artwork. In my master's project I appropriate the lost piece, I explore its story, and based on the police report, I physically reconstruct it. As a nod to the traditional art academy training, which largely consisted of creating technically perfect reproductions of existing masterpieces, I examine the framework, principles, and boundaries of the act of graduation through this reflexive process and through the artwork itself.
thesis
Presence and reflection in the act of graduating
My thesis examines models of higher education in art, as well as associated paradigm shifts, and the act of thesis defence. I analyse graduation projects characterised by critical thinking. My thesis asks the question whether students are able to perform the graduation experience and simultaneously reflect on it. It also dives into the significance of the graduation project and the degree in an art student's life. My aim is to explore the situation that, as a graduating student, I am also part of.
