compostable shoe collection
My masterwork is an industrially compostable shoe collection, where the design of the sole is the focal point. My goal is to replace environmentally harmful sole materials currently used in the footwear industry. To achieve this, I have developed a composite material made of biopolymers and hemp. In addition to developing the material, my collection also places a strong emphasis on the shape of the soles, drawing inspiration from structures created by nature. I have endowed the imprint of the sole with an educational role. When creating the experimental footwear, the potential for mass production was an important consideration in addition to the nature-positive approach.

thesis
The ecological footprint of shoes
or the case for biopolymers in the footwear industry
My thesis expands on the sustainability of the shoe industry. My theory is that we can produce future-proof and sustainable products using cutting edge technology and natural materials. Bioplastics may become the material of change that leaves a smaller ecological footprint than any current technology. There have been numerous innovations in the sector. However, in most cases a sustainable, nature-positive attitude is lacking, or poorly applied. The focal point of my thesis is the production of shoe soles. After identifying potential options for replacing the non-recyclable shoes that currently dominate the market, I examine the relevance of biopolymers, and composite materials derived from them, as an alternative to petroleum products. My aim is to compile a holistic picture based on a comparison between different materials. In addition to considering alternative solutions, I study the work of domestic and international designers for whom a material-centred approach, circular economy, local sources and recycling are important. My goal is to introduce my own biodegradable material onto the market. I also aim to explore the integration of responsibility on the part of the designer and a nature-positive approach into the production process.
