The subject of my masterwork is the connection between mental health and architecture. My goal is to create a healing environment that has a positive impact on mental health. I have chosen the abandoned quarry carved into the Hármashatárhegy in Solymár as the location for my project. The main objective of my design was to reclaim this damaged landscape, a sort of recultivation and healing. I also wanted to create a built intervention where the power of the environment and nature can be specifically directed towards improving mental health. My design can be divided into two parts based on sensory experiences. One part focuses on outward contemplation through landscape architecture elements, enhancing the existing atmosphere of the site and turning it into the location of external observation. The other part of the design involves a building sunk within the landscape: a space for inward reflection and contemplation. This building would accommodate therapeutic sessions and could also serve as visitor accommodation. The quarry itself, as the chosen location, is already a metaphor for healing. My design aimed to experiment with the abstract healing of a wound inflicted upon the landscape.

thesis

Architecture as a Healing Tool

The central element of my thesis is dealing with mental hygiene. The main question of my thesis is how architectural interventions can help improve the mental health of the general society. I am examining individual perception and explore its interaction with our current system and contemporary society. I researched architectural tools based on the individual's multisensory abilities and their connection with the environment. Through the selected architectural examples, I illustrate the phenomena that can aid in the individual's healing process.
