Revitalisation of the Inota Power Plant

"My design focuses on the revitalisation of the power plant, equipping it with a new function that ensures its continuous and long-term use. My concept is based on the possibilities arising from the intactness of the main building. The revitalisation of the area will therefore be achieved through architectural interventions in the selected auxiliary buildings, as well as landscape design interventions. My design offers a one-year training targeting freshly graduated artists, providing them with opportunities to build their professional network and kickstart their careers through collaborative projects and joint productions. The key element of my design is the creation of a horizontal transportation system that provides linear connections between areas of various functions. At the ground level, the design incorporates landscape interventions and a new road system, while at the upper level, a bridge connects all the buildings. The bridge connects two educational buildings, with three additional buildings located between them, housing the supporting facilities. The ground-level transportation provides access to the areas affected by public traffic, while the elevated level of the bridge allows for access to more private functions. My architectural programme aims to provide opportunities for future expansion, save the valuable building complex from further deterioration, and to serve as a model for revitalising other brownfield areas."

Uninhabited

The abandonment and abundance of buildings from previous eras is a globally relevant issue. We live among the ruins of our architectural past, and we often tend to overlook their presence and underutilisation. Our built environment is a defining product of human activity, which has an economic, cultural, and environmental impact on our lives. They connect us to different eras and societies, as they remind us of our past and create a connection with the communities of the present. Through various chapters of my thesis, I explore how we can coexist with the ruins of our past, with a particular focus on our industrial heritage, by adapting them to meet our present-day needs. I highlight international and domestic revitalisation projects that I consider examples worth following. I also introduce the Inota Power Plant as a potential site for a brownfield redevelopment.
