Gekko (Gecko)

The automotive industry is going to develop more and more products, both physical and digital, for the shared mobility market. My masterwork is a playful mobility service that I present with a specially designed vehicle. My goal is to showcase a more personalised and expressive side of shared mobility.

Vehicle architecture in the age of shared mobility

Young people are less and less likely to want to own a car, primarily because of the variety of easily accessible urban mobility options that are available. The mainstream vehicle industry has not really reacted to the shifting power relations redefined by shared mobility and the subsequently changing everyday use of transportation. My thesis examines what new options and expectations are created by the transformation of car ownership in the field of vehicle architecture. I look for the answer with a historical overview, comparing examples of vehicle history, and a deep dive into the literature of the field. The architecture of a vehicle is defined by the totality of its most fundamental parameters. The car industry responds to every new challenge and every technological breakthrough, which occasionally becomes part of the DNA of vehicle architecture for generations to come. In addition to already existing factors, the architecture of any vehicle adjusted to shared mobility has to consider the central nervous system of local mobility. I have termed architecture that goes beyond the design object “Extended architecture”. Its success depends on the ability to respond to the challenges of its environment, and to shape it in the direction it wishes to go.
