masterwork
The Domus Department Store as a Community Living Room
cultural and scientific incubator house; education, knowledge and sports centre
In my masterwork, I focused on the reinterpretation of the former Domus Department Store, designed by Péter Reimholz and Antal Lázár. Due to the structural and spatial division, the future of the building is somewhat limited and it can only accommodate a narrow range of potential uses and functions. Instead of maintaining the enclosed character of the building, my aim was to loosen up the spaces, which allowed for solutions that deviate from the original architectural concept. My goal was to fill the closed and box-like structure, which originally functioned as a furniture store, with transparent community functions while preserving the original character of the building. I have created a community lounge inside the building: a safe internal space where individuals and communities alike can relax, work, exercise, create, learn, grow, and form new communities over and over.
thesis
Domus Department Store
The anatomy of a building
My thesis focuses on the inception, architectural theory background, original concept, and current state of the Domus Department Store (Domus Áruház), with the aim of examining its potential for future use. Through an overview of the history of Hungarian architecture, I explore the circumstances surrounding the birth of the Domus Department Store, with particular emphasis on the role of IPARTERV (Industrial Building Design Company). Subsequently, I examine the history of the building up to the present day. I inspect the building from environmental, historical, theoretical, and structural perspectives. With an understanding of its architectural theory background, my aim is to assess the feasibility of the current aspirations associated with the building. I also aim to uncover the structural and spatial design that is based on the theoretical framework.
