masterwork
From Office Building to Housing
"The main vision of my masterwork is to provide a fierce response to the currently predominant housing system driven by private ownership, which fails to provide alternative housing options. The housing system lacks a sufficient number of affordable rental apartments and municipal housing. There is a strong societal demand for social housing: a new type of housing, driven by the values of community life and sustainability. The location of my masterwork is a former office building in Kőbánya, Budapest, that has been vacant and unused for decades. It is an exciting proposition for me to explore how the structure of an office building can be transformed into social housing. It is important to explore how such an open mindset and structure can be created within the closed and segmented system of an office building."

HOUSING POVERTY The reality of the lack of social housing
The housing crisis cyclically repeats year after year, but in recent years it has reached its peak. A response to the current level of housing poverty, the energy crisis, and inflation needs to be much more complex. My thesis seeks to shed light on why certain segments of society in Hungary struggle with housing issues. The current housing system, dominated by private ownership, marginalises lower-income individuals, families, young professionals, people transitioning out of social institutions, and other similar segments of society. For them, the system does not offer viable alternative housing options, as the housing system established by the government lacks a sufficient number of affordable rental apartments and municipal housing. There is a strong societal demand for social housing: a new type of housing, based on the idea and application of the toolkit of sustainability. Nowadays, it is not enough to create decent housing conditions; a much more practical design is required for the foundation of a functional housing structure, which provides an opportunity for communal living and the creation of a model of sharing, all while upholding the values of sustainability.
