Monumental Ceramics in the Eastern Slovakian Architecture of the Second Half of the 20th Century
In the second half of the 20th century, an emerging trend of monumental ceramics significantly questioned the role of ceramics. The artists approached clay as a means of artistic expression from a new perspective. They abandoned functionality in their work and placed the ceramic material in the context of fine art. Since the fall of socialism, however, their work has largely been forgotten, and their creations often go unnoticed. The professional treatment of the topic is incomplete, and the evaluation of the artworks is coloured with prejudice. My thesis can be regarded as a theoretical introduction to Slovakian monumental ceramics, with a particular emphasis on the Eastern Slovakian region. In my work, I outline the cultural and political conditions and eras that led to the emergence of monumental ceramics in Slovakia. My study maps out the monumental ceramic artworks in Eastern Slovakian settlements.
