The Continuity of Swiss Graphic Design from the 1960s to the Present Day
In the 1950s, a design style emerged known as Swiss style or International style, which revolutionised graphic design fundamentally with its simplicity and objectivity. In our fast-paced post-60s world of visual noise the Swiss style still emerges every now and then, sometimes taking centre stage, and at other times lingering in the background; but it never fades into oblivion. How can it stay relevant in any given era? In my thesis, I sought answers to these questions by studying seminal graphic design history books and exploring the literature of the Swiss style. In my research, I initially focused on exploring the emergence, roots, and key pioneers of the Swiss style. Afterward, I reviewed the most prominent graphic design works, movements, and designers from the 1960s to the present day. I attempted to chart the contemporary Swiss graphic design landscape with its visual language and key designers.
