The Role of Environment and Objects in Montessori Education
My research examines what role design can play in education. To answer this question, I chose Maria Montessori's education method as the subject of my thesis. One of the distinct characteristics of the Montessori method is its emphasis on the role of the environment in children's development. Maria Montessori believed that by establishing appropriate relationships with their environment, children can engage in independent learning and development. Consequently, the classroom structure and educational tools are key elements of the Montessori method. In my thesis, I examined the pedagogical principles that Montessori applied to establish the environment and set of educational objects. By the end of my research, a pattern of a design approach emerged, rather than specific design principles. Additionally, my analysis highlighted two factors that significantly contribute to the development of young children: multisensory experiences and learning through (hands-on) manipulation. The aim of my research is to provide perspectives and approaches for thinking about education and its design.
