The Short Cultural History of Dog Depictions
The aim of the thesis is to summarize cross-cultural and even cross-temporal symbolic systems through which the analysis of the dog as a symbol in visual artworks becomes possible. What does their presence express? Can these patterns be discovered in photography as well as fine art? To conduct a thorough analysis of the artworks, I consider it necessary to take into account the key ethological and psychological characteristics of the human-dog bond, which can help us understand the beliefs, rituals, and mythologies associated with dogs. What place does the dog occupy in the human psyche, and how is this manifested in art?
