The Evolution of the D-Segment

In my thesis, I focus on the popular D-segment of the automotive industry, which refers to larger mid-size cars (large family cars, compact executive and business saloon cars). In my thesis, I examine how these vehicles are constantly evolving and explore what drives these changes. With my research, I aim to uncover what redefines the characteristic criteria of each era time and time again. I support my statements by conducting research covering a period of nearly fifty years, analysing specific types and versions of vehicles. I extensively examine the Volkswagen Passat as one of the most successful representatives of the D-segment, and then compare it to the Opel Kadett / Astra series, another compact car category.
