The Mental Impact of Our Visual Environment

With the increased time spent at home due to the COVID-19 situation, the question of what we can do in our homes to improve our well-being has become increasingly important in recent times. We shape our own personal space and our home according to our own personality and taste, so we can interpret it as a reflection of our personality, a visualisation of our identity. As a designer, I believe it is crucial to understand the mental consequences of various design decisions, architectural and graphic elements, as well as shapes and visual solutions, since the visual impact of our home strongly influences our mental well-being — and vice versa. Our personal space may become a direct reflection of our mental state. I build my thesis on aiming to identify the general guidelines for creating a mentally supportive visual environment for ourselves, using professional literature and a questionnaire-based research approach. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the thesis is focused on order, the quality placement of objects, and spatial design.
