Political Regime Change and Technological Revolution in Hungary

The aim of my thesis is to illustrate how the technological revolution influenced the political transformations in Hungary during the 1980s and 1990s: the fall of communism, the period of regime change. The opinions of experts and contemporaries that I interviewed during my research (key figures that shaped the alternative media of the time) confirm that technological innovations and political events were interrelated. I demonstrate how strongly societal processes were influenced by the advent of affordable and accessible technological devices around the time of the regime change. Furthermore, I examine how the technological changes impacted the political public sphere. I introduce pioneering independent filmmakers who captured the most important moments of the regime change, with a particular focus on the group known as 'Fekete Doboz' (Black Box). Additionally, I examine whether the release of documentary material depicting protests and figures of the opposition had an impact on politics, as it made it impossible to continue denying the societal divide.
