Movement in Timeless Space
People today can travel more easily than ever before. Although migration is not a new phenomenon, it has taken on a unique form now, as the spatial systems in which we live frame our activity, and these are specific to our present time. In my thesis, I examine the daily mobility of the 21st-century individual, along with the tools and means enabling it. The use of public transportation can be likened to using shared urban spaces, even though the concepts of 'public transportation' and 'vehicle' do not imply a sense of community in the least. In my thesis, I first present studies about commuting in order to illustrate the complexity of the topic. Then, with the help of various urban and spatial theory texts, I attempt to decode what happens in the 'mobile room' and how we try to use crowded spaces in an extremely individualistic way. We are an audience on the bus, looking around without any real spectacle. Finally, I present my experimental workshop project that focuses on the interior of the bus.
