What Do Our Knick-Knacks Reveal About Us?
It can be said that the current interior design trends in Hungary cannot be considered stable, unlike the peasant or bourgeois interior design practices of the past. It can be observed that alongside contemporary trends, there is also a place for iconic objects from the past. These mixtures of styles and eras in home spaces can sometimes be difficult to comprehend for an external observer. I explore the emergence and impact of this phenomenon through the realm of decorative objects, specifically knick-knacks. What effect does this type of environmental culture have on us if we grow up and socialise within it? What values do we prioritise, and to what extent does it influence the shaping of our subsequent independent environments? How do these modes of self-expression impact successive generations within a family context? The goal of my thesis is to understand this system and answer resultant questions from a design perspective.
