When Our House is Finally Built
Presenting Collective Living Options, with a Focus on the Miskolc Kollektív Ház (Collective House); a Thematic Examination of Community, Collective Work, and the Built Environment
Collective living arrangements not only come with economic benefits but, according to my thesis, a well-designed communal lifestyle also enhances the quality of the individual inhabitants' lives. I assume that by integrating these living spaces into the relationship systems of the established social framework, it is possible to create communities whose members share the benefits and drawbacks of collective living. An example that fits into this thought experiment is the Miskolc Collective House (Miskolci Kollektív Ház), a collective living arrangement established in the late 1970s by a group of young architects, whose history and functioning can address my hypothesis. After presenting relevant examples of collective living situations, my thesis examines the communal lifestyle of the 'Miskolc Collective' through three thematic focal points. I specifically explore the functioning of the community, the characteristics of the building that frames it, and the touchstones of collective work. Finally, I attempt to uncover the connections between the three focus areas.
