thesis
Modern Hygiene
The aim of my thesis is to study people’s relationship with hygiene, based on the evolution of object culture. For this purpose, I examine how products that are related to everyday health and body care have evolved over history, which helped me identify different patterns and principles that influenced my design approach. Furthermore, I describe the relationship of today’s people with technical devices and modern health science as definable systems. In the first half of the thesis, I search for patterns before the Industrial Revolution, while in the second half I analyze the modern age, which is based on urbanization, the rise of middle classes, and globalization.

Frigo – Modern Hygiene
My project is the concept of a food storage system that can be a part of the changing apartments of the near future. As a result of urbanization, the boundary between classical rooms is blurring, so the process of food storage and consumption is no longer focused to specific areas in the apartment as it used to be. I reflected on this phenomenon by designing a product family with a cooling and disinfecting effect. Frigo has portable and built-in modules of different sizes that can be used in any room and that use inductive charging technology. Its cooling method has the same basics as traditional refrigerators, but achieves its disinfectant and insulative function by combining several modern technologies: for instance, it uses UVC LEDs, PCA coating and activated carbon filters. In terms of aesthetics, it draws inspiration from classic decorative plates and household appliances, but it also has an independent, modern form language.
