Art Therapy through Game Development
Art is a powerful tool to communicate thoughts and feelings visually when people might struggle to put them into words. It has been embraced by psychologists to be used during therapy as it helps address the psychological, emotional and behavioral problems of emotionally troubled, abused patients. It adds another dimension to therapist-client interactions by creating a context in which individualisation and separation can be witnessed and practised through creative activities and experiments (Malchiodi C. A., 2003). Recently, the field of video games development has started to overlap with artistic and psychological fields, either through the making of art games, or through raising awareness of the importance of mental health. A therapeutic video game can be described as easy to start up, allowing the therapist to support and guide the patient during the play time, and allowing the tracking of the overall performance of the patient (Jan-Henk Annema, 2010).
