Kolházak – Collective Housing Forms in the City
In my thesis, I am re-evaluating the notion of communal living, exploring its history and its typologies and background processes present in urban life. Central to my research is Budapest, where I am presenting the steps of changes between flat sharing, household cooperation and other forms of collective living. My thesis is that closed architectural and operational conditions of different urban collective living forms provided an opportunity to an island-like, heterotopic operation in the ever finer tissue of urbanisation, which were then able to retain the classic communal ethos of cities.

Mokembe – Housing
The project is the rearrangement of a block in Budapest’s 8th district, based on the critical approach of two typologies – the tower and the urban villa – that are unusual in this metropolitan environment. On the scale of the city and the block, these two elements question the exclusivity of the conventional architectural strategies, namely preservation, insertion and complete rebuilding. The interior of the new buildings integrate the more and more blurry postindustrial notions of working and living space into a closed architectural composition.
